Bonsai 101

What makes a bonsai a bonsai? Is it a plant? Is it art? How do plants live and thrive in pots? Can anyone create and grow bonsai? In Bonsai 101, instructor John Demaegd will guide you through the basics of bonsai care, answering these questions and more in this broad overview of the art form.

Participants can bring in any bonsai or a plant they are considering for bonsai to be evaluated. Bonsai is a sculptural art and is not limited in its plant choices. This class is perfect for beginners or those looking to deepen their understanding of this unique practice.

John has an extensive background in fine arts through painting and recently retired as a park leader for St. Joseph County Parks. He has been practicing bonsai for most of his adult life and brings a wealth of knowledge to us, combining both the horticultural and artistic aspects of bonsai. His hands-on approach makes this workshop an engaging and educational introduction to the world of bonsai.
